One of the biggest misconceptions about ecommerce business I often notice is: many people have an impression that ecommerce business can only be conducted on marketplaces like Amazon, Lazada, Alibaba, etc. While this is not wrong, it is just a fraction of the whole ecommerce ecosystem.
Before we proceed to examine ecommerce business any further, it is very important to be reminded of our main objective in first place. Our WHY – why do we want to start an ecommerce business in the first place? Is it because “ecommerce” the current buzz word, so we must do it also?
The reason we want to start an ecommerce business is so that we have an online business that is not limited to geography and time constraint; we want a business that allows us to sell globally and is running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! Yes, we can achieve this by simply listing our products on marketplaces like Amazon, Lazada, etc., but the cons would outweigh the pros.
I will not be talking about the pros and cons of listing products on Amazon or Lazada in this article, but my purpose is to make sure that you are aware of the limitless possibilities you can have with your ecommerce business if you were to run your own online store. Honestly speaking, your ecommerce growth will always be capped if Amazon or Lazada is your PRIMARY business model. You will be forever depending on these platforms, and you won’t be able to do all those fun stuff in digital marketing – Facebook, Google ads, etc.
Thanks to the advancement of technology, online globalization, it is now so easy for us to gain access to manufacturers and suppliers. And also the fact that we humans love to buy things, ecommerce is now one of the best and exciting businesses you can embark on.
When it comes to your business, you must be in control. This is only possible when you run an ecommerce business on an online store that you own. There are a few tools available; we use Shopify because it is user friendly and has all the functionality we need to scale our business – it makes our life so much easier!
In order to build a thriving ecommerce business, not only must you be in control, but you also need to understand the flow of your sales cycles. You want to be able to test, tweak, and edit them as you see fit. Call me a control freak, but when it comes to my business, I want to control everything – from product selection, thank you page, email sequence, and especially my front end marketing (Google and Facebook ads). This business determines your livelihood and prosperity! You are investing your hard earned money into this business, so the last thing you want is for the money to go down the drain simply because you have not no idea what you’re doing.
I am truly thankful for the opportunity to build an ecommerce business. I have been blessed with tremendous business and personal growth. And this is only the beginning. We may have been in this business for a few years now, but we are barely scratching the surface. We are definitely looking forward to the exciting growth ahead. All these are possible thanks to the discovery of the KEY to a long term online business success!
